New York Red Bulls Game

This Saturday, 11 September 2010, was a start of my son's soccer season.  He has been playing at East Windsor PAL recreational league for about a year now, but he has never been at a real game.  A colleague of mine offered her tickets to the NY Red Bulls-Colorado Rapids game that she could not attend and I gladly accepted them.

To beat the traffic and find a parking close to the stadium we left the house a bit early .  We parked at a enclosed garage right next to the stadium.  A lot of people were already there.  They came with portable grills and all sorts of food - burgers, hot dogs, fresh vegetables and of course - beer.  Kids were running around passing soccer ball to each other.

The brand new Red Bulls stadium looked awesome.  I could not wait to go inside, but there were plenty of pre-game activities that held us up.  Particularly, there was a show put on by so-called "Red Bulls Street Team".  To the sounds of DJ several guys were showing tricks with a soccer ball that I have never seen before.  They were truly soccer ball virtuoso.  They really captured the attention of the crowd and my son in particular.  I started to worry that after a show like that he would find the real game boring (and I would not blame him).

Finally we went into the stadium and found our seats.  Sitting in the section 113 row 6, it looked like the players were just in front of us.  The pre-game ceremony included playing the national anthem next to an enormous US flag that was carried into the field by the US military personnel.

Finally, the game started.  The first half started with the total domination of NY.  As we were sitting close to Red Bulls goal, most of the game was happening further away from us and I noticed that my son started to loose interest.  However, the two goals scored during the first half by New York got him (and the rest of fans excited).  At the half time break, we went to get some popcorn which immediately improved my son's mood. I finally could see excitement in his eyes!  The Red Bulls added to that excitment by scoring the third goal (which this time was right in front of us!)

The final score: Red Bulls 3 - Rapids 1.  Another story ends with the happy ending!
